Want to lose some weight? Well, try switching to diet soda, right?! WRONG!! People switch to diet soda in hopes of losing a few pounds by cutting calories, but really what happens is our body responds the opposite.
The truth is, we are drinking beverages that are full of artificial sweeteners (chemicals) like aspartame and sucralose. This leads to horrible side effects. In a study conducted by the American Heart Association, people who drank diet or light beverages were 36% more likely to have metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome means you have at least three of the following:
- Abdominal obesity
- High fasting glucose
- High triglycerides
- Low HDL cholesterol
- Elevated blood pressure
Keep this in mind the next time you go to grab a soda, “light” beverage, or a sugar free coffee at your local coffee shop. The clever marketing done by certain companies has misled us to believe these are good options. Instead opt for good old water. Sweeten it up with flavor by infusing it with lemon, fruit, mint, etc. Your taste buds and your body will thank you! Cheers!
